The Downtown Eastside is a small ten-block community of poverty stricken people,
inexpensive hotels and rooming houses. It lies between two social extremes.
On one side is historical Gastown with elegant turn of the century architecture attracting
tourists with stylish boutiques and trendy shops. On the other side is a more ethnically mixed area called Chinatown.
Vancouver's Chinatown is the third largest in the world after San Francisco and New York.
Real estate is scarce and prices are very high.
The downtown eastside is being encroached upon by these two diverse societies.
